Following an executive session at the December 17, 2024 Board Meeting, the Glynn County Board of Education named Mike Blackerby, currently serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Operations, as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of the Glynn County School System. Dr. Scott Spence will continue to serve as Superintendent through his previously announced retirement date of June 30, 2025, to help with the transition.
Prior to this announcement, the Board approved the November 2024 minutes and the following consent agenda items:
- October 2024 Financial Report: Year-to-date revenues are at 23.4% of the budget, while expenditures are at 28.8%. The budget position stands at 33% as of October 2024.
- Technology Surplus: Upgrades will be made to network switches in all schools. The old switches will be sold according to BOE policy.
- Golden Isles Parkway Site Application: O.C.G.A. 20-2-260(c)(7) requires the Georgia Department of Education to review and approve proposed school sites. The local board of education must submit an application for site approval to GADOE for the new Glyndale Elementary School.
- SRO Body Cameras: The Board approved the purchase of 30 Officer Safety 10 Plan Plus Bundles from Axon Enterprise, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona, for $555,358.68. This bundle includes hardware, a 5-year software license, and training necessary to equip SROs with body cameras.
- Kloud-12 Classroom Camera Purchase: The Board approved the purchase of classroom cameras for four middle schools from Kloud-12 of Lawrenceville, Georgia, for $638,625.00. This purchase includes cameras, mounts, licensing, and training, and will be made through the TIPS purchasing contract.
- School Bus Purchase: The Board approved the purchase of ten Blue Bird propane-powered school buses for $1,692,500 from Yancey Bus Sales and Service. This purchase qualifies for $440,550 in GADOE school bus purchase reimbursement funds and $120,000 in alternative fuel incentive rebates.
- Board Policy Revision for JG(1) Video Surveillance: The superintendent recommends that the proposed revisions to Board Policy JG (1) be considered for adoption by the Board of Education after a 30-day public review. This policy revision aims to enhance video surveillance measures within the school system.
During the Work Session preceding the Regular Meeting, the Board received updates on:
- Strategic Plan Review: Updates included shifts in progress status across four of the five goal areas. The strategic plan aligns with Georgia’s Systems of Continuous Improvement Framework as outlined by the Georgia Department of Education.
- Online Student Registration: In March 2025, GCSS will begin transitioning to an online student registration feature in Infinite Campus. This feature will allow parents/guardians to complete student registration from their personal electronic devices, streamlining the process and reducing paperwork.
- 2023-2024 CCRPI Data: All grade bands made substantial increases in their CCRPI scores, with the district recording an overall score of 85.2. This is the highest score in district history, placing third in FDRESA.
